Did you know that you can put a Boy Scout license plate on your car? Not only do you promote awareness of Scouting, but a portion of the tag cost provides the council financially. You even get a tax deduction out of it!
A favorable 2008 IRS Opinion Letter addresses the deductibility of specialty license plate fees as charitable contributions. IRS explains that the annual donative fee paid in addition to the regular costs of a license plate and intended as a gift to a charity can be treated as a charitable contribution by the purchaser on their tax return.
According to the explanation given in the IRS's opinion letter, the revenue- sharing portion of the plate fee is deductible, but not the regular costs of those types of license plates such as registration and special plate fees for manufacturing etc.
